Modern times bring lots and lots of things that make the writing process much easier and far more comfortable than it ever was before. However, there is a problem - there are so many of them and it is so easy to get lost in the myriad of various writing tools that offer you so many beautiful things. Some of them help you to stay focused, some of them ease the formatting chores, others are lean and fast operating... Hopefully, I've checked several dozen of writing applications for you and chose those that I've found the most effective.

1. Kapost
Kapost is a quality service for editing and content planning. While it is meant to map "B2B marketing strategy", it can be as a tool of collecting and selecting information from various sources in order to process in the most effective way. It helps with tracking the work-flow, it has wide capabilities for feedback, and you can create your own calendar to map things out even more meticulously.
Sounds impressive? Well, the price is also a little bit of that - it's $95 per month. But it's worth every spent penny.
2. Bubbl.us
But before you start to plan - you need to get an idea what are you going to do, right? You need a bit of brainstorming! Bubbl.us can help you organize your brainstorming process and drive it into an endless possibilities of diversion and transmutation. With a little help of this website you can create a map for your ideas, tap into the fertile grounds and wrap yourself around the topic quick and easy. Design is intuitive - so you'll waste no time to get used to it. You can customize content in a variety of ways - by changing formatting, bubble color, size of text and other stuff.
It's free to use - so you're probably already using it. (You need to register in order to save your materials).
3. Q10
This one is the heavyweight. It's a well-known fact that it is fairly easy to get distracted while writing anything. Applications like Q10 help you to fight that problem with extreme prejudice. Q10 is a full-screen environment with a variety of tools that helps you to organize yourself. Among the goodies it can offer:
- Word and page and character count statistics. You can even program how many words approximately should be on each page;
- You can customize the look of text and paragraph format;
- You can change line spacing, paragraph spacing, font specifics and also (but optional) color of text (don't make it brown, for Faulkner's sake!);
- It has easy to program timer alarm. You can make a power writing sessions in a Pomodoro way or just mark some periods when you're most able to write extensively;
- Spell check!
- You can comment any part of the text with a reliable multi-leveled system of notes;
- Optional. There typing sound effects. But they overstay their welcome pretty fast;
- It's small and fast. Like 400 Kb small.
4. Diaro
Say whatever you want about diaries, but you can't deny the fact that they can help you to get into the right mindset and analyze yourself at various points of life. Diaro can help you make it a little bit more streamlined and smooth that raw pen and paper. There's a wide range of tools to use, like:
- Search;
- Folder organizer;
- Calendar;
- Tags;
- Location;
- You can add photos and other files to the posts;
This makes diary writing easy. And when it's easy - it quickly becomes a habit - which is a good thing. Because you will always have something to go back to and reconsider.
And the most important thing - it's free.
